Eyebrow Lift

At McCollough Plastic Surgery, we understand that drooping eyebrows can impact one’s appearance and self-confidence—sometimes a hindrance to seeing out of the corners of the eyes. An eyebrow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a procedure designed to elevate and rejuvenate the brow area. This procedure can open up your eyes, reduce signs of aging, and leave you looking more refreshed and youthful.

The Impact of Drooping Eyebrows

Drooping of the eyebrows is frequently one of the first signs of aging. This condition is often overlooked because most people are unaware of the problem and the degree of improvement its correction can provide. A heavy eyebrow causes the upper lids to drop or descend until, in the advanced stages, the skin of the eyelids can touch or overlap the eyelashes. Patients often complain that their eyes appear to be getting smaller or deeper-set and that eye makeup usually ends up high on the upper part of the lids within a short while after it has been applied. Drooping eyebrows contribute to the “tired look.”

How to Correct Drooping Eyebrows

Drooping eyebrows can be improved by a forehead lift, temporal lift, or by the excision of skin above the drooping section of the brow. Both procedures “lift” the brow, upper lid, and surrounding tissues, which usually results in eyes that appear larger, more rested, and more youthful. Following eyebrow surgery, there is often lessening of the deeper “crow’s feet” next to the outer corners of the eye. For the best result, “crow’s feet” may also require a skin resurfacing procedure.

The eyebrow lift will not correct either excess skin or pouching caused by fat herniation at the inner corners of the upper lids, and it will not have any effect on lower lid conditions. On the other hand, it can be, and often is, effectively combined with surgery to improve problems in those areas. We prefer to accomplish the eyebrow lift with the temporal or forehead portion of the face lift, but in some cases, it may be performed as an independent procedure.

Types of Eyebrow Lift

Direct Brow Lift

A direct brow lift is a surgical procedure to raise and rejuvenate sagging eyebrows, effectively countering the signs of aging. During this technique, an incision is made just above the eyebrows, usually in an existing forehead wrinkle, thereby allowing for direct access to the brow area. Excess skin is then removed, and the eyebrows are elevated to a more youthful position. This procedure offers a targeted solution for individuals seeking a refreshed and alert appearance with minimal scarring and downtime. This is the most common approach to a drooping brow recommended in male patients.

Forehead/Temporal Brow Lift

A forehead or temporal brow lift is a surgical procedure designed to elevate the lateral, or outer, position of the eyebrows and improve deep forehead wrinkles. This technique involves making incisions behind the hairline in the temporal areas or at the edge of the hairline in forehead regions. Each allows for the repositioning of the brow. By lifting the eyebrows and addressing forehead lines, this procedure provides a more youthful appearance, making it a popular choice for those seeking comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

The Brow Lift Recovery Process

A varying amount of swelling and discoloration follows this operation, so try not to become anxious or depressed about it—it will pass. However, healing takes longer in some patients than in others. We try to keep swelling to a minimum by prescribing special avoidances prior to surgery and special medications and supplements to be taken after your surgery and by using meticulous surgical techniques. The continuous application of cold compresses for the first 12-24 hours following surgery is very helpful. We think it may be of some benefit for up to three days.

You should probably not plan to return to work until four or five days have elapsed following the surgery or, perhaps, one week. Even then, it might be wise to procure sunglasses with large frames unless you don’t mind becoming the center of attention. You’ll have to play this “by ear. Do not attempt to evaluate the results of your surgery while the tissues are swollen. Although you will see some immediate improvement, things look better when the swelling has dissipated, but it takes weeks or months. So, be patient!
